Fiscal Management

The Settlement was founded in 1891, incorporated in the State of Illinois in December 1898, and designated an IRS 501(c) 3 organization in January 1947.  Our fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30.  Annual audits are conducted for the Settlement by Caldwell, Coren & Company, LTD.  Financial statements are presented in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles.

The Settlement spends approximately 90% of all revenue on direct programming, with 10% set aside for Administration and Development.  The majority of Settlement funding comes from government contracts (53%), private contributions (32%), facilities rental and service income (10%), program fees (5%), and United Way.  There are currently two endowments, one to support the Settlement and one to support the Vittum Theater. The Settlement's assets total roughly $11 million.

The success of Settlement programs depends on the financial contributions of many individuals, businesses, and organizations.  Supporters may donate to the Northwestern University Settlement Association online through the Events.org site.
