CCT
Gallery
"Titled Key" by Beatriz Ledesma |
The CCT Gallery
presents four shows per
year three juried shows that present works by local, professional
artists and Youth Visions, which displays the artistic creations
of area school children.
Once
a year, local artists who are interested in displaying their work
at the CCT Gallery are invited to present slides or their work.
The Settlement's Visual Arts Committee reviews and selects works
for the next four shows. Each show has an official opening
to which the public is invited. A book of artists' statements
and prices is displayed at each opening. On average, more
than 20 professional and 50 student artists are presented each year
to approximately 500 gallery visitors.

Adventure Stage Chicago at Vittum
Theater
Since
the early 1900's, Northwestern University Settlement has used the
arts as a tool to teach language, self-confidence, and pride in
oneself and one's community. It has offered a place where
members of its multi-cultural community could perform or participate
as audience members in a wide range of artistic endeavors, celebrate
and preserve their ethnic heritages, and come together as a community
to share their concerns and triumphs.

Throughout the first half of the last century, the Settlement offered
drama classes and clubs to help Polish and Eastern European immigrants
learn English and study elocution; these clubs flourished for many
years at the Settlement, performing regularly in a building known
as the Guild Playhouse. For nearly two decades Guild Playhouse
was the site of plays, concerts, dance revues, talent shows, and
other performances. Sadly, the building was demolished in
1947 after a fire. Although arts programming continued after
this time, it lost much of its focus and was relegated to a back
burner for the next few decades.
Based
on a comprehensive community needs survey conducted in the early
1990's, the Settlement realized that there was a great and growing
hunger for the arts in West Town. In 1994, the Settlement
re-established a performing and visual arts program known today as Adventure Stage Chicago.

On
September 23, 1998, it opened the doors of the Vittum Theater, home to the nationally recognized Adventure Stage Chicago.
Located on the third floor of the Settlement's Evanston Hall, this
multi-function space has fixed seating for 299 people, a complete
theatrical sound and lighting system, two dressing rooms, a costume/set
construction/ green room, and administrative office space.
Since opening, the Settlement's theater arts program has served all aspects of Settlement
workfrom a full season of professional, family-friendly Adventure Stage Chicago productions, to long-term residencies in public elementary school classrooms, to providing performance space for Settlement groups,
to housing neighborhood school assemblies and graduations, to presenting theater companies from
across the city and nationall bringing the arts to nearly 15,000
students from 100 city schools each year.
Total annual audience participation for all shows and events exceeds 35,000.
The Settlement focuses on using the theater for community building
and fostering the personal growth, education, self-worth and dignity
of Settlement family members. Most programs involve strong
partnership approaches with community residents, teachers, board
members, and others.
